Everything you need to know
Retiring in Mauritius has become one of the most attractive lifestyle moves for South Africans, Europeans, and international retirees seeking a safe, financially stable, and beautiful place to enjoy their next chapter. With its warm climate, favourable tax policies, and world-class standard of living, Mauritius offers far more than a tropical escape — it provides long-term security, peace of mind, and a welcoming expat community.
This guide covers everything you need to know before making the move: eligibility, lifestyle, finances, healthcare, and what to expect when living in Mauritius as a retiree.

Mauritius is consistently recognised as one of Africa’s safest, most stable, and best-governed countries. For retirees, this combination of lifestyle and financial benefits is unmatched. Here’s why it’s catching the attention of retirees worldwide:
Favourable Tax Regime
The island offers a 15% flat tax rate, with no inheritance tax, no capital gains tax, and no taxation on worldwide assets (unless remitted into Mauritius). This makes retirement planning simple and tax-efficient.
Safe & Secure Lifestyle
Mauritius boasts low crime rates, political stability, and a peaceful environment ideal for retirees seeking comfort and security.
World-Class Healthcare
Reliable private healthcare, access to international specialists, and modern medical facilities ensure long-term peace of mind.
Close Proximity to Major Hubs
Only a 4-hour flight from Johannesburg and well-connected to Europe, the island offers easy travel for family visits or quick getaways.
Strong Expat Community
Retirees enjoy an active social scene, community events, clubs, and a large South African and European expat presence.
Natural Beauty & Outdoor Lifestyle
From coral-rich lagoons to mountain trails, Mauritius offers year-round outdoor leisure — perfect for retirees who value an active, healthy lifestyle.
Mauritius offers a Residence Permit for Retired Non-Citizens, designed for individuals aged 50 and above who meet specific financial criteria.
Eligibility Requirements
Be at least 50 years old
Provide proof of:
USD 24,000 available funds, or
A guaranteed monthly income of USD 2,000
Commit to transferring USD 24,000 annually (or USD 2,000 monthly) into a Mauritian bank account.
Once approved, the Residence Permit is valid for 10 years and is renewable.
Medical Examination
A medical test must be completed in Mauritius at an approved clinic before your permit is issued.
Mauritian Bank Account
Retirees must open a local bank account to transfer the required funds. APTEC assists with account opening and banking introductions.
Dependents
Your spouse, common-law partner, and unmarried children under 24 may apply for dependent residence permits.
Property Ownership
Buying property is not a requirement. However, retirees may purchase property under approved schemes (from USD 375,000), granting residency for as long as they remain owners.
Citizenship
A retirement permit does not grant citizenship or permanent residency — but consistent fund transfers may qualify you for a 20-year Permanent Residence Permit later.
Retirees enjoy:
• Affordable domestic help
• High-quality dining and entertainment
• International supermarkets
• Quiet, secure neighbourhoods
• Reliable fibre internet
Compared to South Africa, the UK, or mainland Europe, Mauritius offers a surprising degree of affordable luxury.
Healthcare & Medical Support
Mauritius has excellent private hospitals and clinics offering:
• General practitioners
• Cardiologists, dentists & specialists
• Emergency services
• Access to international specialists
Medical insurance is recommended but competitively priced.
Social Connections
Whether through golf, yoga, water sports, hiking clubs, or expat meetups, retirees quickly build strong social circles.
Relocating involves several administrative steps — but APTEC simplifies the entire journey.
